SYML Set Premieres on the Steven Colbert Show
Seattle is a place where good people, good music, and amazing creative opportunities often come back around. What started as a connection forged in the fires of a KEXP volunteer job (a gig from Sam Kelly Jr.’s early days in Seattle) recently resulted in a filmed live performance on the Late Show with Steven Colbert!
Live music has been one of the things we’ve been longing for most throughout the pandemic. So when SYML and his team at Good Harbor Music approached us to capture a live set, we said YES PLEASE, immediately masked up, and made it happen.
SYML is the musical identity of Brian Fennell, a Seattle-based songwriter and producer who was previously part of the indie band Barcelona. Brian’s harmonious and beautiful piano-based sound sets him apart in the Seattle music scene.
We filmed two sets. The first was at the legendary Studio X in Seattle and featured Brian at a grand piano with six guest musicians accompanying him with percussion, strings, horns and vocals from Abbey Gunderson and Jessica Dobson (member of Deep Sea Diver and an All is Well UA launch video alumn!).
The second film, a full concert set, was filmed at Seattle’s St. Mark’s Cathedral, a location that not only matches SYML’s tone with its beautiful architecture and dreamy light but also in its breathtaking acoustics.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert chose the song “DIM” for their #PlayAtHome song of the day Apr 23, 2021.
The full concert set embraced its church setting with a Sunday Morning-Mass global live stream on the Mandolin platform April 25th, 2021. You can watch the full set on Mandolin by clicking here.
You can also watch SYML’s single, “Symmetry,” which was filmed at St. Mark’s Cathedral.
